What makes a good Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminar? There are many answers to this question; I will offer three main thoughts.
First, the content needs to be relevant and current. A seminar should add to and push forward your growth.
Second, an effort of entertainment should be felt. An attendee’s attention can drift when bored. Some required lectures are like medicine that must be taken but tastes bad. A good seminar should be both stimulating and fun.
And third, the presenter should try to engage and be responsive to the crowd and the individual. The presenter should follow his game plan but be flexible enough to adjust as required based on responses from participants.
Why should these thoughts come to mind at this time? Well, we recently had the good fortune of hosting Andre Galvao for a seminar at Impact’s Beaverton academy. By way of review I would start with, “Wow!” Wow, what a great seminar. The content was superb, part of his current game and all linked together. Andre’s approach was clear and effortless as well as entertaining. He really wanted his nuances and his styling to come across in his coaching. And he is so dang friendly; I guess no one has told him how big of a deal he is.
On his arrival Friday night, Andre immediately put us at ease with his friendly and humble ways. Rolling with our coaches, he was very open to questions and free with his concepts and history. It was very refreshing to sit with a man who has done so much in BJJ in such a relatively short time. He has the wisdom of an old player, while still being in his prime. Andre is dedicated to the path he has set for himself, and is happy to help others follow a similar journey.
If you have the opportunity to attend one of Andre Galvao’s seminars, take it. You will be happy you did. Watch for him at Impact Jiu Jitsu again in 2012.
