1. Wow!!! Did you see that? Daniel Krug can fight!

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to IMPACT’s Daniel Krug for his Heavy Weight Belt win at the FCFF’s Rumble at the Roseland on Saturday night. Daniel has been training extremely hard over the last 3 months … and it is great to see all his work pay off.

Those of us that train with him know it is true, but because so many opponents have backed out we have not often had the joy of seeing Daniel in action. Last Saturday, that all changed at the Rumble at the Roseland. Our Daniel finally got his chance at the FCFF Heavyweight title. His opponent, Daniel Stewart, was entering the ring as the current Super Heavyweight Champion. His camp was convinced Stewart was the best fighter in MMA. In fact, this month they canceled a fight against Krug only one week before the EWC fights. They told the promoter of the EWC that Krug was not good enough to fight Stewart. Eager to clarify a few things for Stewart and his camp, Krug agreed to fight him for the heavyweight title at the Rumble at the Roseland.

Saturday’s show was a good one with great fights from local teams. Daniel’s fight was the last of the night. The audience was full and the excitement was palpable. The bout started with a bang–a bang of Daniel’s shin on Stewart’s ribs. Daniel spent the next 3 rounds demonstrating his “Tool Box”: great kicks, great hands, great defense, great control of range. At one point Stewart was able to connect with a left hook, Daniel answered by raising his hands in a questioning manner as if to say, “Was that it?”

The end of the third round had Daniel ground controlling his “national wrestling team” opponent in a reverse triangle and dropping huge, undefended body punches. It was a bell to bell domination by our new FCFF Heavyweight Champion. Nice job Daniel, great execution.

Daniel’s next step will be into the professional arena, leaving the FCFF Heavyweight belt open. Don’t worry, the Heavyweight title won’t leave our gym for long. Watch for our teammate, Cory Sutton, at the next Rumble at the Roseland, where he will re-match with DJ Linderman and bring the belt home.

Thank you to all of you who came out on Saturday and supported our fighter. Thank you also to the warm up team: Richard “Cutman” Fowler, Eric Hemphill, Aaron Stark, Derrick Russell.

3. Foam Rolling

Have you ever wondered what the black PVC pipe (with and without foam) or those white foam things in the gym are for? They are used for self-myofascial release (SMR); also know as, foam rolling. “Foam rollers are the poor man’s massage therapist…Foam rolling prior to a workout can help decrease muscle density and promote a better warmup. Rolling after a workout may help muscles recover from strenuous exercise” according to Michael Boyle. For a more detailed description including techniques of foam rolling please see a coach or check out the following websites:

8. Functional Movement Screen

Interested in learning more about your body? Would a physical diagnostic help you understand how to train better, what your strengths and weaknesses are, and how to optimize your physical performance?

If you are interested in running through a physical movement screen and some other measurements, Coach Tom is offering FREE physical workups to those who are interested. Whether you are a veteran or a new-comer, a Jits guy or an MMA fighter, a hobbyist or a pro, having a better understanding of you body’s current movement patterns will help you train smarter and harder. It takes about 25 - 30 minutes to do. Email Coach Tom HERE if you are interested. He will accepted folks as long as his schedule will allow.

Coach Dewey in Newberg is also looking for athletes that have been training BJJ or MMA for greater than 2 years to do some data collection through Functional Movement Screens. This is also a free assessment as long as his schedule allows.

Email Coach Dewey HERE if you are interested.

9. Bad Weather / Class Status Reminder

In light of today’s weather … just a friendly reminder regarding the gym’s open status and bad conditions. The Beaverton gym is open today / all classes are planned to go as schedule. This may change based on weather. When in doubt, don’t hesitate to call and confirm.

The weather conditions can become challenging at times, especially during the winter months — whether it is high winds, ice, snow, etc. The safety of our members and our staff is of paramount importance. As such, there may be times when we cancel gym classes due to bad weather. We will let our members know via the web page and the voicemail recording on the gym’s phone.

For future reference, we will follow the Beaverton School District lead in regards to opening / closing. If the BSD closes due to weather, then IMPACT Jiu Jitsu will not be running instructional classes that day.

To confirm if the gym is closed, you can go to http://impactjj.com/news/ or call the gym’s phone at 503.350.3926. If nothing is noted, then you can assume that we are running classes as normal. Your safety is our concern … but we will do all we can do to keep the gym open and classes running.
