1. Lukesh Fights Hard at Sportfight — No Shame

Andy Lukesh (IMPACT Jiu Jitsu) met Ian Loveland (Team Quest) at the Bodog’s Sportfight 20 on Saturday night … and it was definitely one of the best fights of the night. It was physical, active, back and forth swings in momentum, and it was a BATTLE. Both guys came to compete and go hard. Unfortunately, Andy lost by decision 29-28.

The first round was intense. Both guys came right at each other. Ian ended up getting the best of the initial exchange and spending a lot of round one on top of Lukesh. Nonetheless, Andy never stopped his attack.

In the second round, both guys were able to get deeper into their games. Andy made two very strong attempts for a choke / guillotine from top, but Ian managed to fend them off. Ian demonstrated some strong knees, bringing Andy to the mat once and opening up a gash on his forehead … only to see Lukesh immediately pop right back up and attack.

Andy really took it to Ian in the third round. It was clear that Andy’s conditioning was strong and Ian was beginning to fade physically. The two warriors battled relentlessly. Andy reigning down knees from cross-sides top, but not being able to lock in a submission. It would have been neat to see a 4th round — Andy was definitely getting into his stride. Unfortunately, it was only a 3 round match-up.

The crowd at the Rose Garden knew that they had witnessed a fantastic match … and gave both guys a huge ovation. Andy came away disappointed - but he has absolutely nothing to be ashamed about … it was a TERRIFIC effort and display of ability. GREAT JOB ANDY — NO SHAME! ! !

2. Belting Long Overdue for the Crew

On Saturday, October 27, we had a “belting” of nine grapplers. This has been loooooooong overdue. All these guys have shown tremendous growth over the last twelve months.

There was a great positive vibe in the BJJ 3 class (lead by Coach Armand) as things began to ramp-up. Guys faced “the room” for over ninety minutes as they began to realize what was taking place. It was a beautiful thing!

HUGE CONGRATS to EVERYONE. Enjoy it for a day or two … and then get back out there and get training! ! !

3. Halloween Schedule, Oct. 31 - NO Formal Classes - Open Gym training only

There will be NO formal class (Cubs’ Club, Womens’ Jiu Jitsu, Combative Conditioning, BJJ1, BJJ3, and CU) on Wednesday, October 31, due to Halloween.

We will be running an Open Mat on Halloween from 4-8:30. The gym will be open for free-sparring / training.

Here are some Halloween Safety Tips:

    Trick-or-Treaters

  • Carry a flashlight

  • Have a walkie talkie or cell phone so that you can contact an adult in the case of an emergency

  • Walk, don’t run.

  • Stay on Sidewalks

  • Obey traffic signals

  • Stay in familiar neighborhoods

  • Don’t cut across yards or driveways.

  • Wear a watch you can read in the dark.

  • Make sure costumes don’t drag on the ground.

  • Shoes should fit (even if they don’t go with your costume)

  • Avoid wearing masks while walking from house to house.

  • Carry only flexible knives, swords or other props.

  • (If no sidewalk) walk on the left side of the road facing traffic

  • Wear clothing with reflective markings or tape.

  • Approach only houses that are lit.

  • Stay away from and don’t pet animals you don’t know.

    Parents

  • Make your child eat dinner before setting out.

  • Children should carry a cell phone, a walkie talkie, or quarters so that they can communicate with you.

  • Ideally, young children of any age should be accompanied by an adult.

  • If your children go on their own, be sure they wear a watch, preferably one that can be read in the dark.

  • If you buy a costume, look for one made of flame-retardant material.

  • Older children should know where to reach you and when to be home.

  • You should know where they’re going.

  • Although tampering is rare, tell children to bring the candy home to be inspected before consuming anything.

  • Look at the wrapping carefully and toss out anything that looks suspect.

    Homeowners

  • Make sure your yard is clear of such things as ladders, hoses, dog leashes and flower pots that can trip the young ones.

  • Pets get frightened on Halloween. Put them up to protect them from cars or inadvertently biting a trick-or-treater.

  • Battery powered jack o’lantern candles are preferable to a real flame.

  • If you do use candles, place the pumpkin well away from where trick-or-treaters will be walking or standing.

  • Make sure paper or cloth yard decorations won’t be blown into a flaming candle.

  • Healthy food alternatives for trick-or-treaters include packages of low-fat crackers with cheese or peanut butter filling, single-serve boxes of cereal, packaged fruit rolls, mini boxes of raisins and single-serve packets of low-fat popcorn that can be microwaved later.

  • Non-food treats: plastic rings, pencils, stickers, erasers, coins.
