Bill started off with some probing hands, clinched, arm dragged, worked to his stunned opponent’s back, jumped up and began setting on a rear naked choke while his opponent was standing. His opponent came crashing to the mat and then quickly tapped — all in 26 seconds. It was a solid display. Team SBG had a solid night on Saturday at the Roseland Theater. The match went back and forth, with Mike throwing good hands and a few kicks while his opponent was set on shooting in for a take-down. After two action packed rounds (10 minutes in all) of battling back and forth, the final bell rank. Going to the judges’ decision, they determined it to be a draw. No shame. Mike really showed great spirit and determination.Â

Daryl found himself fighting off his back in guard bottom for the better part of 2 - 3 minutes. His opponent fended off a few sweep attempts and a potential triangle setup — all while throwing down some solid shots to the body. Unfortunately, Daryl turned to his belly in his attempt to get off the matt and suffered a tough loss by RNC after a real battle against the fence. No shame.Â

Andy Lukesh had a title fight with Elijah Faye out of Team Quest. Andy has been training very hard, and came in for the title fight. Andy came out to show his ability with strikes … instead of relying on his excellent wrestling / ground skills. And completely dominated the fight in every aspect. It was 10 minutes of punishment. It was amazing that Elijah was able to walk out of the ring at the end of the match - he dealt with a lot of heavy hits from Andy. The fight went to the judges’ decision … and it was Unanimous. Nothing short of FANTASTIC! ! !Â

Great job guys and great job SBG crew for supporting our athletes and being positive! You ROCK!Â

2. New Schedule - Clarifying QuestionsÂ

On Monday, February 6, the new class schedule goes into affect at the Beaverton Gym. Some folks have asked some questions.

Q: MMA1, MMA2, MMA3, MMA Cross-Training - what are the differences?

A: Great questions.

MMA1 - beginner class sequence. This 24 class sequence that gives a new athlete an overview of the core 3 ranges: stand-up, clinch, and ground.

MMA2 - After an athlete has completed his/her tour of MMA1’s 24 class sequence and been giving the coaches’ nod, they are expect to move into the MMA2 series. This set of classes focus on performance against a non-cooperative opponent — lots of technical skill development, positional sparring, and isolation on the fundamentals in each range.

MMA3 - sparring / fighters’ prep - participation in this class comes from coaches’ recommendation. It’s function is to take the basics and train them in an environment of greater intensity and challenging circumstances. This is a great class for guys who want to compete in MMA or simply want to continue to develop the skills.

MMA Cross-Training - This class will focus on lots of bag work, drills, and sparring. It is open to all athletes. It is a great way to work your skills while challenging your conditioning level as well.
