There’s one right here in Oregon!

Oregon Open is a traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament where matches are decided by highest score, submission, or referee stoppage. Both the Gi and No-Gi events follow a single elimination format but with consolation matches. Every effort is made to provide at least two matches for all competitors.

In 2010, Oregon Open hosted 590 athletes. We expect to see the same this year. This means good size brackets, the opportunity for masters divisions, and a ton of great Jiu Jitsu. With more than seven years of tournaments held within the subleague.com family, Oregon Open is excited to once again put on a professional, smooth, timely, and fun event.

Registration closes on Monday, September 26. Complete details can be found at subleague.com.

Impact Jiu Jitsu rocked at the United Combat Sports Submission Tournament by Sub League on Saturday, January 22, 2011, with all our warriors laying it on the line each match. Congratulations to everyone who competed. We are proud to have you wear the blue. Look for results on subleague.com this coming week.

Impact JJ also had three fighters work their hearts out preparing for the United Combat Sports MMA fights, The Resolution 2, on Saturday night: Matt Hammon, Bryan Nuro and Lee Flores.

Unfortunately, Matt’s original opponent and his back up must have heard about Matt because they both fled and did not show to fight.

Bryan Nuro, representing us and our Eugene brothers (NWMA), had a perfect warm up led by coaches Jason Tubania and Armand Debruge. The fight started like an Olympic sprint with both fighters looking for the advantage. Bryan’s opponent, with an impressive display of high kicks and wild swings, gave Bryan a chance to work on his foot work and movement. Opponent tries for a spinning back fist and Bryan goes in for the body lock to take down. Bryan gives a jits clinic on top control then sinks a deep rear naked choke that would not let up until his opponent tapped out. Great Job Bryan – 2 and 0 now.

Lee came out next after an excellent warm up with Larry Munyon, James Marlier, Armand Debruge and Jason Tubania. Waiting back stage for the fight to start, Lee became a little settled, so we gave him a little spark up at the cage door and Lee’s fight face would have chased away a wolf.

Lee’s 6’2″ opponent came out with intent on controlling the range with kicks and punches. Lee chose to circle and move to set up a fantastically timed shot, throwing his opponent to the cage where he then set up a big lift and throw (thanks for the extra work coach Eric Jetton!). Lee passed guard and began looking for a top crucifix, but his opponent kept moving desperately for escape. When the opponent scrambled to get away, Lee pounced to a rear naked choke that would not be denied. Great win Lee.

Both fighters represented us well, we are very proud of you Bryan and Lee. And thank you to our warm up team coaches Armand Debruge, Jason Tubania and James Marlier. Also thank you Larry Munyon and Mike Moreno for offering your words of experience to our warriors.

You all make me proud!
- Coach Michael

Final reports state there were 590 competitors and 75 teams in attendance. Competitors traveled from as far north as Vancouver, BC, and as far east as Kalispell, Montana, to compete in the all-day event at Liberty High School in Hillsboro, Oregon. Highlights included “Fastest Tap” awards going to the eight quickest submissions of the day (the majority coming in under 15 seconds); the Men’s Brown Belt Absolute Division (including Impact’s own Matt Leech and Andrew Wong); and the elite grapplers showcased in the Men’s Advanced Absolute Division at the end of the day.

Impact Jiu Jitsu showed up in full force, with 85 total competitors wearing the blue (Gi and No-Gi combined). Team Impact brought home 14 first place wins, eight second place, and 25 third place medals. The event was a spectacle of talent and a testament to the size and scope of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the Northwest. Thank you to all the competitors who came out, gave it their all, and represented Impact Jiu Jitsu… many of whom spent the rest of the day helping out at the event and coaching their teammates.

We would also like to thank all the sponsors for supporting subleague.com’s events. Oregon Open’s presenting sponsors, CageCulture.com and the Oregon National Guard, play a huge part in promoting the sport with their continuous support of this event and the Spring Submission Wrestling League.
